Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治鼻衄, 成流不止, 失血過多, 譫語失神, 閉目撮空, 不省人事. 生地黃ㆍ黃芩ㆍ黃連ㆍ梔子ㆍ川芎ㆍ赤芍藥ㆍ柴胡ㆍ䓀莄ㆍ犀角(鎊)ㆍ甘草各一錢. 右剉, 作一貼, 大棗一枚同煎, 臨服以藕汁, 磨墨汁調服. 《入門》

Translation

Treats nosebleed running in a stream without stopping, excessive blood loss, delirious speech and loss of spirit, the eyes closed and the hands groping at the air, and loss of awareness. Fresh rehmannia, scutellaria, coptis, gardenia, chuanxiong, red peony, bupleurum, platycodon, rhinoceros horn (filed to shavings) and licorice 1 don each. Cut up, make one packet, decoct with one jujube, and at the moment of taking stir in lotus root juice with ink ground into it. — Uihak Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Hyeol)

Clinical commentary 臨床

閉目撮空 — the eyes closed and the hands groping at the air — is the sign of the gravest delirium, and the Women chapter's 1.29.8.3 uses the same phrase for the collapse after postpartum haemorrhage. Here it follows a nosebleed, and the formula is the chapter's heaviest cooling prescription. 陶氏, Master Tao, is Tao Hua 陶華 of the Ming, whose Shanghan formulas the Immun draws on. The ink stirred in at the end is the 醋墨 of the Women chapter's 1.29.2.6. **Contains rhinoceros horn, CITES Appendix I and prohibited in trade.
