Cut up, make one packet, decoct in water, and give with the aquilaria juice, the cinnabar powder and bamboo sap stirred in. — Manbyeong Hoechun 回春 (Donguibogam · Haesu)

Clinical commentary 臨床

A cooling formula built on scutellaria and gardenia with the chapter's usual descending drugs, and three things stirred in off the heat at the end: aquilaria juice for the qi, bamboo sap for the phlegm, and cinnabar. The first two are sound and the third is the reason the formula cannot be used. **Contains cinnabar, which is mercuric sulfide. This must not be prepared.** Mercury poisoning from exactly such preparations is documented, and nothing in the formula depends on it — it was there to settle the spirit in a patient frightened by his own breathlessness. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
