Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治咳嗽上喘, 淸肺氣, 利咽膈. 甜葶藶(炒)ㆍ桑白皮(炒)ㆍ天門冬ㆍ馬兠鈴ㆍ半夏ㆍ紫菀ㆍ杏仁ㆍ貝母ㆍ百合ㆍ人參各一錢, 百部根ㆍ甘草各五分. 右剉, 作一貼, 入薑四ㆍ棗二, 水煎服. 《丹心》

Translation

Treats cough with panting above; it clears the lung qi and disinhibits the throat and diaphragm. Dry-fried sweet lepidium seed, dry-fried mulberry root bark, asparagus root, birthwort fruit, pinellia, aster, apricot kernel, fritillaria, lily bulb and ginseng, 1 don each; stemona root and licorice, 5 fun each. Cut up, make one packet, add four slices of ginger and two jujubes, and decoct in water. — Dangye Simbeop 丹心 (Donguibogam · Haesu)

Clinical commentary 臨床

A moistening and cough-stopping formula — asparagus root, lily bulb, aster, stemona and fritillaria — with lepidium seed and mulberry root bark for the water and the panting. Stemona is the tradition's drug for a long dry cough and is still used for it; so is the pairing of asparagus root with lily bulb for a cough that has gone on until the lung is dry. **Contains birthwort fruit, which carries aristolochic acid: it causes irreversible kidney failure and urinary tract cancer, and must not be used.
