Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治喘嗽痰盛, 寒熱往來, 咽乾口燥. 陳皮一錢, 半夏ㆍ鸎粟殼ㆍ薄荷ㆍ紫蘇葉ㆍ烏梅肉ㆍ紫菀ㆍ知母ㆍ桑白皮ㆍ五味子ㆍ杏仁ㆍ桔梗各七分, 甘草五分. 右剉, 作一貼, 薑三, 水煎服. 《丹心》

Translation

Treats panting cough with abundant phlegm, cold and heat coming and going, and a dry throat and parched mouth. Tangerine peel, 1 don; pinellia, poppy husk, field mint, perilla leaf, smoked plum flesh, aster, anemarrhena, mulberry root bark, schisandra, apricot kernel and platycodon, 7 fun each; licorice, 5 fun. Cut up, make one packet, add three slices of ginger and decoct in water. — Dangye Simbeop 丹心 (Donguibogam · Haesu)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Thirteen drugs at nearly equal weight, and the design is three things at once: aster, apricot kernel and mulberry root bark to bring the lung qi down, anemarrhena and mint for the dryness and the alternating fever, and smoked plum with schisandra and poppy husk to hold the cough in. The last three are the astringent group, which is what distinguishes this formula from the draining ones in the same section — it is for a cough that has gone on long enough to need stopping rather than clearing. **Contains poppy husk, which is an opium preparation and a controlled substance; it suppresses cough and respiration both, and must not be prepared.
