Clinical commentary 臨床

Two cold minerals and nothing else, carried in ginseng decoction. 痰涌如泉 — phlegm welling up like a spring — is frothy sputum pouring out, and the chapter sets this formula against it because the two stones are the coldest and heaviest things in the pharmacy: the reasoning is that a fire driving fluid up out of the lung must be weighed down. The picture described is acute pulmonary oedema, and the ginseng vehicle suggests the patient was collapsing as well. **A patient coughing up profuse frothy sputum with breathlessness needs emergency treatment for pulmonary oedema.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
