Translation

Treats the several dysenteries in adults and the vacuity-accumulation dysentery in children, without number day and night. Poppy husk, four large ones with pith and calyx removed, half roasted and half raw; tangerine peel, one piece, half raw and half stir-fried; licorice, two inches, half raw and half roasted; mume plum, two fruits, half raw and half roasted in dough; jujube, two fruits, half raw and half roasted in dough; fresh ginger, two pieces, half raw and half roasted in dough; costus root, 1 don in two pieces, half raw and half roasted in dough; chebula, two large fruits, half raw and half roasted in dough; black soybean, sixty beans, half raw and half stir-fried; astragalus, two inches, half raw and half roasted; white atractylodes, two pieces, half raw and half roasted in dough; tangkuei, two inches, half raw and half roasted in dough. Cut up and mix evenly; for each dose take 5 don in a cup and a half of water, put it in a porcelain bottle, boil down to half, strain and take warm. A child takes one or two hop. This formula divides raw from cooked and balances cold against hot; cold and hot once dispersed and the intestine and stomach once made firm, the water and grain separate of themselves — what then is there to fear from diarrhoea and dysentery? — Seongong 省翁 (Donguibogam · Daebyeon)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The strangest formula in the chapter and the one with the clearest idea behind it: every drug is used half raw and half cooked, so that each contributes both its cooling uncooked nature and its warming processed one. Seongong's reasoning is set out at the end — divide raw from cooked, balance cold against hot, and the bowel will sort the water from the grain by itself — which is a theory of therapeutic neutrality rather than of opposition. It is the only formula here designed for a case where the physician cannot tell whether the pattern is hot or cold, and that it was given to children suggests it was thought safe. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
