感應元

Croton seed is a violent purgative and is toxic; the oil is pressed out to reduce it, leaving the so-called frost. The wax-and-oil mass is divided into ingots rather than pills.

Translation

Treats accumulation dysentery and enduring dysentery with red and white, pus and blood mixed together. Nutmeg roasted in dough, blast-fried white ginger and hearth soot, 2 nyang each; costus root, 1.5 nyang; cubeb, blast-fried sparganium and clove, 1 nyang each; croton seed, a hundred kernels with skin, heart and membrane removed and the oil pressed out to a frost; apricot kernel, a hundred kernels with skin, tip and twin kernels removed, bran-stir-fried and ground separately; beeswax boiled in wine, 4 nyang; clear oil, 1 nyang. Grind the seven drugs fine, add the croton and apricot powders, first heat the oil with the wax until it melts, and mix it with the drug powder into a mass. Divide each nyang into ten ingots, and take one ingot stirred into rice water; or make pills the size of a mung bean and swallow ten in plain hot water. — Seui Deukhyobang 得效 (Donguibogam · Daebyeon)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Accumulation dysentery is the chapter's category for one caused by matter lodged in the bowel, and the treatment is a purgative — croton seed, the most violent in the pharmacy, with sparganium to break accumulations. The croton is defatted to a frost and buried in wax and oil, which both masks it and slows its release; that is a real attempt at controlling a dangerous drug. It remains a dangerous drug: croton oil is a severe irritant and the dose cannot be controlled by these means. **This must not be prepared.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
