Translation

Treats an enduring dysentery and a blood dysentery. Roasted licorice, 1 nyang; costus root and coptis, 5 don each, stir-fried together; poppy husk and fresh ginger, 5 don each, stir-fried together. Powder, add a little musk, and take 2 don on an empty stomach stirred into rice water. — Bonsabang 本事 (Donguibogam · Daebyeon)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The pairwise stir-frying is the technique to notice: costus with coptis, poppy husk with ginger, so that each pair is tempered before the powder is made. The large dose of licorice is unusual and makes this the mildest of the three Costus Powders in the chapter — fitting, since the indication is a dysentery that has already run long. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
