Translation

Treats gullet block in the young, which is because the blood of the stomach duct is dry and unmoistened, so that the stool is blocked and food will not go down. Chinese angelica, white peony, prepared rehmannia, raw rehmannia and white poria, 1 don each; bitter orange, tangerine peel, fried coptis, perilla seed and fritillaria, 7 fun each; cardamom and aquilaria ground in water for its juice, 5 fun each. Cut up, make one packet, add one slice of ginger and two jujubes, decoct in water, and take with the aquilaria juice stirred in. — Manbyeong Hoechun 回春 (Donguibogam · Guto)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The companion to Dangguiyanghyeol-tang and the difference between them is the patient's age: this one is for the young, and where the elder's formula carries magnolia bark, cyperus and trichosanthes for phlegm, this carries both rehmannias for the dryness. The reasoning is that in a young patient the gullet is dry rather than obstructed by phlegm. 胃脘血燥不潤, 故便閉塞 — the blood of the stomach duct dry, and so the stool blocked — is the chapter's own mechanism for gullet block, and it is why 嘔吐噎膈反胃宜通大便 goes on to treat the condition by opening the bowels. Constipation here is not a complication but part of the diagnosis. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
