治噎膈反胃, 血虛有火, 三陽枯竭. 當歸ㆍ川芎ㆍ白芍藥ㆍ生地黃(並酒炒)ㆍ陳皮ㆍ縮砂ㆍ半夏ㆍ白茯苓ㆍ白朮(土炒)ㆍ香附子ㆍ枳實ㆍ烏梅肉ㆍ藿香ㆍ赤茯苓ㆍ檳榔ㆍ木通ㆍ猪苓ㆍ黃芩(炒)ㆍ黃栢(人乳炒)ㆍ知母(人乳炒)ㆍ赤芍藥ㆍ天門冬ㆍ麥門冬ㆍ甘草各五分. 右剉, 作一貼, 水煎服. 《醫鑑》

Translation

Treats gullet block and stomach reflux with blood vacuity and fire, where the three yang are withered and exhausted. Chinese angelica, chuanxiong, white peony and raw rehmannia (all wine-fried), tangerine peel, cardamom, pinellia, white poria, white atractylodes (earth-fried), cyperus, bitter orange, smoked plum flesh, patchouli, red poria, areca, akebia, polyporus, scutellaria (fried), phellodendron (fried in human milk), anemarrhena (fried in human milk), red peony, asparagus, ophiopogon and licorice, 5 fun each. Clinical commentary 臨床

Twenty-four drugs, every one of them at five fun, which is what the name is really about: the formula is an assembly rather than a design. Inside it one can see Samul-tang for the blood, Ijin-tang for the phlegm, the three bitter cold drugs for the fire, and the two 門冬 for the dryness — four formulas folded into one because the chapter holds gullet block to be all four things at once. 三陽枯竭 — the three yang withered and exhausted — is the Inner Classic phrase the 噎膈反胃病因 section builds on: small intestine, large intestine and bladder all dried out, so that nothing passes either way. Frying phellodendron and anemarrhena in human milk is the period's way of taking the edge off two very cold drugs for a depleted patient. **Contains pinellia, which is toxic in the raw state and must be properly processed.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
