Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治結陰便血. 蒼朮ㆍ升麻ㆍ附子(炮) 各一錢, 地楡七分, 葛根ㆍ厚朴ㆍ白朮ㆍ陳皮ㆍ赤茯苓各五分, 乾薑ㆍ當歸ㆍ神麴(炒)ㆍ白芍藥ㆍ益智仁ㆍ人參ㆍ甘草(灸) 各三分. 右剉, 作一貼, 薑三棗二, 水煎服. 《寶鑑》

Translation

Treats bound yin with bloody stool. Atractylodes lancea, cimicifuga and aconite (blast-fried) 1 don each; sanguisorba 7 pun; pueraria, magnolia bark, white atractylodes, tangerine peel and red poria 5 pun each; dry ginger, angelica, medicated leaven (stir-fried), white peony, alpinia, ginseng and licorice (mix-fried) 3 pun each. Cut up, make one packet, add 3 slices of ginger and 2 jujubes, decoct in water and take. — Bogam 寶鑑 (Donguibogam · Hyeol)

Clinical commentary 臨床

結陰, bound yin, is the chapter's name for bleeding from the bowel that comes of cold rather than heat — the yin has congealed and the blood, having nowhere to go, leaks below. The formula is Pyeongwi-san warmed with aconite and lifted with cimicifuga, and only sanguisorba in it stanches. Bleeding from the bowel treated with aconite runs against the instinct of the rest of the chapter, and 1.17 gives it three formulas because the cold kind was held to be common. **Contains aconite, which is toxic.
