Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治面色白而不澤, 悲愁欲哭, 脉按之空虛, 是爲脫精, 脫神. 宜峻補肝腎, 收斂精氣, 補益元陽. 五味子ㆍ巴戟ㆍ肉蓯蓉ㆍ兎絲子ㆍ人參ㆍ白朮ㆍ熟地黃ㆍ骨碎補ㆍ茴香ㆍ牡蠣ㆍ龍骨ㆍ覆盆子ㆍ益智仁各等分. 右爲末, 蜜丸梧子大, 每三十丸, 米飮呑下, 日三服. 虛甚, 八物湯呑下. 《東垣》

Translation

Treats the face white without sheen, grieving and wanting to weep, the pulse empty under pressure — this is the essence deserted and the spirit deserted. The liver and kidney should be supplemented forcefully, the essential qi gathered and the origin yang boosted. Schisandra, morinda, cistanche, cuscuta, ginseng, white atractylodes, cooked rehmannia, drynaria, fennel, oyster shell, dragon bone, rubus and alpinia in equal parts. Powder them, make honey pills the size of a firmiana seed, and take thirty at a time with rice broth, three times a day. Where the vacuity is severe, send down with Eight Substances Decoction. — Dongwon 東垣 (Donguibogam · Jeong)

Clinical commentary 臨床

悲愁欲哭 — grieving and wanting to weep — beside a white face and an empty pulse. Dongwon's indication puts the mood with the body, and 脫神, the spirit deserted, is named as the condition alongside the essence. The Blood chapter's 1.12 gave the white face for blood lost; here it is for essence.
