Clinical commentary 臨床

Two preparations in one formula, and the order matters: the five drying and dispersing drugs are steeped overnight in rice-washing water and dried before being powdered, while the three supplementing ones are added afterwards untreated. Rice-washing water is the standard medium for taking the harshness off a drug, and the method says what the formula is for — a taxation cough in a patient who cannot take a plain dispersing prescription. The beeswax melted into each dose is unusual and is what gives the formula its name: a small piece of wax in a hot decoction coats the throat as it cools. The same reasoning as the lozenge forms elsewhere in the chapter. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
