Jade Pivot Elixir

Okchu-dan

한글 옥추단 · Pinyin Yu Shu Dan

玉樞丹

A derivative of 太乙紫金丹, registered as taeeuljageum-dan: this leaf adds only 雄黃 一兩 and 朱砂 五錢 and sends the reader back for everything else, so the base drugs are carried in the ingredient list at the doses the base leaf gives them. The base's 山茨茗, which is 山慈菰, the Chinese tulip bulb, has no herb id and is left out of the ingredient list. The alternate name 追毒丹 given here is not the 追毒丹 already registered as chudok-dan — that is the 得效's 巴豆ㆍ白丹香ㆍ輕粉ㆍ雄黃ㆍ黃丹 pill packed into an opened abscess in the Abscesses chapter, a different formula sharing the name. The transcription writes 黄 for 黃; the standard form is printed.

Donguibogam

Translation

Another name for it is Chudok-dan, the Toxin-Pursuing Elixir. The diseases it treats and the way it is taken are the same as above. ○ It is the Great Unity Purple Gold Elixir above with realgar 1 nyang and cinnabar 5 don added; the method of preparation is the same as above. ○ On entering a district where worm toxin is used, at the first sense that something is not right, take one lozenge at once; the patient vomits or purges and recovers. It is truly a treasure for saving the age and guarding life. — Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Haedok)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Realgar and cinnabar added to a lozenge that was already built on two Euphorbia purgatives. The additions are arsenic sulfide and mercuric sulfide, and they are there because the chapter reasoned that a mineral poison would meet a poison — the same logic that puts 雄黃 into four more formulas on these two pages. 誠濟世衛生之寶也 — truly a treasure for saving the age and guarding life — is the Immun's own estimate, and the use it describes is prophylactic: a traveller entering a district where food might be poisoned carries the lozenge and swallows one at the first unease. Whatever the lozenge did, it was to empty the gut from both ends, which is what 或吐或利 says. **Contains cinnabar (mercury) and realgar (arsenic sulfide), together with the two Euphorbia purgatives of the base formula and musk from a CITES-protected animal. This is itself a poisoning. It must not be prepared or taken.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
