Cure-All Resolve Toxin Formula

Manbyeonghaedok-won

한글 만병해독원  ·  Pinyin Wan Bing Jie Du Yuan

萬病解毒元

A third formula in the 紫金丹 group and not to be confused with the other two, because the names differ by one character. 太乙紫金丹's own second alternate name is 萬病解毒丹, with 丹, and the Abscesses chapter 下 cites the lozenge under that name at 1.10.6; this leaf stands up 萬病解毒元, with 元, from the 得效, and its composition is different — it drops 續隨子's partner 紅芽大戟 for plain 大戟 at a smaller dose and adds 山豆根, 朱砂, 雄黃 and 全蝎. The prose treatment line above these leaves at 2.1.5 writes the name a third way, 萬病解毒丸 with 丸, and a collation note on that page records 丸 : 元(First Edition), so the prose was pointing at this leaf and the First Edition agrees. The id follows the leaf's own 元 and so does not collide with the Abscesses chapter's use of 萬病解毒丹 for 紫金錠. 蚊蛤 is 文蛤, which is 五倍子, gallnut, and is listed as such. 山茨菰, the Chinese tulip bulb (Iphigenia indica, or the Cremastra pseudobulb), has no herb id and is left out of the ingredient list although it is a chief drug here. The transcription writes 黄 for 黃; the standard form is printed.

Clinical commentary 臨床

The 得效's version of the chapter's master antidote, and it is the more aggressive of the two. Where 太乙紫金丹 relies on the Euphorbias and musk, this one brings in cinnabar, realgar and whole scorpions, and adds 山豆根, mountain bean root, which is the one drug in the list a modern reader can place: it is strongly bitter and cold and was the standard drug for a swollen, poisoned throat. The pill is also used outwardly — 井水硏付所傷處, ground in well water and laid on the injured place — which is how the chapter handles a bite or a sting it reads as toxin entering at a wound. Laying an arsenic-and-mercury paste on broken skin would be absorbed through it. **Contains cinnabar (mercury), realgar (arsenic sulfide), scorpion (cardiotoxic), the drastic purgatives 大戟 and 續隨子, and musk from a CITES-protected animal. This must not be prepared or taken, and it must not be applied to a wound.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
