Guarding the Spirit Elixir

Boryeong-dan

한글 보령단  ·  Pinyin Bao Ling Dan

保靈丹

The transcription reads 斑猫去頭足翅 and a collation note two leaves on, at the foot of 021a inside the 金蚕蠱毒 section, records 翅 : 趐(First Edition); 翅 occurs in this leaf and nowhere in the leaf the note sits in, so the note annotates this formula. The transcription's 翅 is printed. 赤足蜈蚣 二條(一生一灸) is printed as the transcription has it; 一灸 reads as 一炙, one roasted, and 灸/炙 is not normalized in this corpus. 黃藥子, airpotato yam, has no herb id and is left out of the ingredient list. 猫 and 蝎 are printed as the transcription has them. The transcription writes 黄 for 黃, 隂 for 陰, 清 for 淸 and 浄 for 淨; the standard forms are printed, and the porcelain box is apparatus, not an ingredient.

Translation

Treats worm toxin, every toxin and all drug toxin, with divine effect. Cinnabar 1 nyang, mountain bean root 5 don; realgar, minium, musk, airpotato yam, caper spurge seed (husked and ground separately), croton seed (husked, but the oil not pressed out) and blister beetle (head, feet and wings removed), 2 don 5 fun each; two red-footed centipedes, one raw and one roasted; and glutinous rice, half raw and half parched, powdered and made into a paste. Compound it on the Dano, the Jungyang or the Nap day; powder the drugs, and do not let hens, dogs or women see it. Use a thin glutinous rice paste to bind pills the size of a euryale seed, dry them in the shade and store them in a porcelain box. One pill to a dose, swallowed down with clear tea, and it must not be chewed open. Before long it brings the toxic matter away, by vomiting or by stool, and the pill comes down together with clotted blood; wash it clean with water and keep it. One pill can save three people. If the case is urgent, then choose an auspicious day and compound it with scrupulous cleanliness. — Deukhyo 得效 (Donguibogam · Haedok)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Ten substances, and the first six of them are poisons. Cinnabar is mercuric sulfide, minium is lead tetroxide, realgar is an arsenic sulfide, croton seed with the oil deliberately left in is a violent purgative and vesicant, blister beetle is cantharidin, and the centipede is a cardiotoxic venom. Only 山豆根 and the glutinous rice are harmless. A pill combining those in one dose is not an antidote to a poisoning; it is a poisoning, and the lead, mercury and arsenic in it would not leave the body with the stool. 藥丸凝血並下, 以水洗淨收之 — the pill comes down with the clotted blood, and you wash it and keep it — tells you what the formula was believed to do: to pass through intact, gathering the toxin on the way, so that the same pill could be recovered and used again. 一丸可救三人, one pill can save three people, follows from that belief. It is not a dose anyone can verify, and the blood in the stool is the likeliest sign that the croton and the cantharides had injured the gut. The compounding is ritual: the Dano, Jungyang or Nap day, and hens, dogs and women kept from the sight of it, with the escape clause 若急則擇吉日精潔修合 for when there is no time to wait for the festival. That is a purity observance around a valued medicine, not pharmacy, and it has no bearing on the product. **Contains cinnabar (mercury), minium (lead), realgar (arsenic sulfide), croton seed with its oil (violent purgative and vesicant), blister beetle (cantharidin), centipede (cardiotoxic) and musk from a CITES-protected animal. Any one of these could kill. This must not be prepared or taken under any circumstances.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
