Translation

Cuttlefish bone and ebracteolate euphorbia root in equal parts. Powder them and bind with sparrow eggs, any number, into pills the size of a small bean; take ten at a time down with a decoction of abalone, three times a day, and press it down with good food. For blood desiccation with the menses cut off: Samul-tang <span class='sochu'>formula in the Blood chapter</span> with peach kernel and safflower added. — Buin Daejeon Yangbang 良方 (Donguibogam · Po)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The Neijing's own formula for 血枯, blood desiccation, given in the Suwen and preserved here almost unchanged — cuttlefish bone with euphorbia root, bound with sparrow eggs, taken with abalone broth. 壓以善饍 — press it down with good food — is the instruction that reveals what the condition was understood to be. Blood desiccation is depletion so severe that the menses have stopped for want of substance, and the treatment is as much dietary as medicinal. The section at 13.14 describes the patient: a young woman who has lost blood, with a dry cough and no appetite. **Contains ebracteolate euphorbia root, which is toxic.
