Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治勞心月閉. 澤蘭二兩, 柏子仁(炒另硏)ㆍ牛膝(酒焙)ㆍ卷柏各一兩. 右爲末, 蜜丸梧子大, 空心, 米飮下五七十丸. 《良方》

Translation

Treats menses blocked from taxation of the heart. Lycopus 2 nyang; arborvitae seed (stir-fried and ground separately), achyranthes (wine-roasted) and selaginella 1 nyang each. Powder them, make honey pills the size of a firmiana seed, and take fifty to seventy on an empty stomach with rice broth. — Buin Daejeon Yangbang 良方 (Donguibogam · Po)

Clinical commentary 臨床

勞心月閉 — menses blocked by taxation of the heart — is amenorrhoea from overwork and worry, and arborvitae seed is here because it quiets the spirit rather than because it moves blood. That is the formula's logic: treat the heart and the menses follow, the same argument the preceding entry makes. The presentation described is recognizable as functional hypothalamic amenorrhoea, where stress and depletion suppress the cycle.
