Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治月經瘀閉, 臍腹疼痛. 乾漆(碎炒令烟盡)ㆍ牛膝(酒浸一宿焙乾) 各一兩. 右爲末, 入生地黃汁一升, 盛銀器內慢火熬成膏, 丸如梧子大, 每服二三十丸, 空心, 米飮下. 《拔粹》一名萬病丸.

Translation

Treats menses blocked by stasis, with aching pain around the navel and abdomen. Dried lacquer (broken and fried until the smoke is spent) and achyranthes (wine-steeped overnight and dry-roasted) 1 nyang each. Powder them, add 1 seung of fresh rehmannia juice, and reduce over a slow fire in a silver vessel to a paste; form pills the size of a firmiana seed and take twenty or thirty on an empty stomach with rice broth. Also called Manbyeong-hwan. — Balchwe 拔粹 (Donguibogam · Po)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Two blood-breakers carried in rehmannia juice reduced to a paste. Dried lacquer is the materia medica's most forceful medicinal for old stasis, and frying it until the smoke is spent is the standard step for driving off its irritant fraction. Achyranthes directs downward, which is what turns a general blood-breaker into a formula for the womb. **Contains dried lacquer, a contact allergen even after processing.
