Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治月閉不通. 大黃爲末, 醋熬成膏, 丸如雞頭大<span class='sochu'>一云雞子黃大</span>, 每一丸, 熱酒和開, 臨臥溫服. 大便利一二行後, 紅脉自下, 是婦人之仙藥也. 加當歸頭, 一名單大黃膏. 《謙甫》一方, 治月閉不通, 服補藥無效危篤者. 大黃(酒蒸九次曬) 四兩, 血竭ㆍ沒藥各五錢. 右末, 水丸, 以四物湯煎水, 下七八十丸. 《醫鑑》

Translation

Treats menses blocked and not passing. Rhubarb powdered and reduced in vinegar to a paste; make pills the size of a chicken's head <span class='sochu'>one account says the size of a yolk</span> and take one at a time, dissolved in hot wine and taken warm at bedtime. After the stool has passed once or twice the red flow comes down of itself; this is the immortals' medicine for women. With angelica head added it is called Single Rhubarb Paste. Another formula treats menses blocked and not passing where supplementing medicines have had no effect and the case is grave: rhubarb (wine-steamed and sun-dried nine times) 4 nyang, dragon's blood and myrrh 5 don each; powder, make water pills, and take seventy or eighty down with a decoction of Samul-tang. — Gyeombo 謙甫 (Donguibogam · Po)

Clinical commentary 臨床

One medicinal, and the sequence it describes is precise: the stool passes first, and then the menses come down of themselves. The chapter's reasoning is that the bowel and the womb sit together in the lower burner and what frees one frees the other. 服補藥無效危篤者 — where supplementing medicines have had no effect and the case is grave — defines when the second, harsher version is used.
