Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治月候凝滯不通, 漸成癥瘕. 當歸ㆍ白芍藥ㆍ川芎ㆍ熟地黃ㆍ大黃ㆍ芒硝ㆍ甘草各一錢. 右剉, 作一貼, 水煎服. 大便泄者不可用. 《丹心》

Translation

Treats menses congealed and stagnant so that they do not pass, gradually forming concretions and conglomerations. Angelica, white peony, chuanxiong, cooked rehmannia, rhubarb, mirabilite and licorice 1 don each. Cut up, make one packet, decoct in water and take. It must not be used where the stool is loose. — Dansim 丹心 (Donguibogam · Po)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Samul-tang and Jowi Seunggi-tang joined — nourish the blood and purge the bowel in one packet. The name is from the Erya's phrase for the four seasons in harmony, 四氣和謂之玉燭, which is what a regular cycle was taken to be. 大便泄者不可用 — not to be used where the stool is loose — is the single contraindication, and it is the one that matters: the formula works through the bowel. **Contains rhubarb and mirabilite.
