Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治經閉, 有血塊, 苦痛. 錦紋大黃四兩. 一兩酒煮, 一兩醋煮, 一兩童便煮, 一兩鹽水煮, 各七次. 右合一處. 又七蒸, 七曬, 爲末. 用當歸, 熟地黃各一兩半, 濃煎汁煮糊和丸梧子大, 紅花湯下三十丸. 《醫鑑》

Translation

Treats blocked menses with blood clots and bitter pain. Brocade-patterned rhubarb 4 nyang: 1 nyang boiled in wine, 1 in vinegar, 1 in child's urine, 1 in salt water, seven times each. Combine them, then steam and sun-dry seven times more, and powder. Take angelica and cooked rehmannia 1.5 nyang each, decoct strongly, and boil the juice into a paste to make pills the size of a firmiana seed; take thirty down with a decoction of safflower. — Gogeum Uigam 醫鑑 (Donguibogam · Po)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Rhubarb processed four ways and then steamed seven times more — twenty-eight boilings and seven steamings before it is powdered. The same four-liquid scheme as the cyperus pills at 13.9.7, applied to a purgative rather than a qi-mover. What all that processing does is take the edge off. Repeatedly steamed rhubarb loses much of its purgative force and retains the blood-moving action, which is what a formula for clots wants. **Contains rhubarb.
