Translation

Washes a sudden red eye and seasonal epidemic eye disease with swelling and pain. Phellodendron alone, powdered, wrapped in damp paper and sealed over with yellow clay, roasted in the embers until dry, and taken out. Take a bullet's worth each time, wrap it in cotton and steep it in a cup of water, steam it over rice, and while hot let the steam play on the eye and wash — most excellent. This formula has passed through metal, wood, water, fire and earth in its preparation, and so is called the Five Phases Decoction. — Uihak Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · An)

Clinical commentary 臨床

One medicinal, and the name describes the processing rather than the ingredients: the phellodendron passes through all five phases on its way to the eye. Clay-luted roasting of a bark is unusual and would char it partly to carbon; what is left is an astringent, antiseptic wash, and the epidemic red eye it treats is adenoviral conjunctivitis. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
