Donguibogam

Translation

Treats both lids red and raw, swollen and painful, scratched and itching, breeding sores, with a hidden roughness hard to open. Gentian, raw uncut licorice, saposhnikovia and asarum 1 don each. Cut them up; boil the gentian first in a bowl and a half of water down to half, then put in the other three and boil down to a little under half a bowl; strain off the dregs and wash while hot, five to seven times a day. — Dongwon 東垣 (Donguibogam · An)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The decoction is staged: the gentian goes in first and is boiled down by half before the other three are added, so the bitter principle is fully drawn and the aromatics are not cooked away. Four medicinals, and the licorice is specified raw and uncut, which keeps it from clouding the wash. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
