Translation

Treats wind toxin red eye with swelling and pain, a flower screen and much tearing. Coptis, red peony and Korean angelica 1 don each. Cut them up, decoct in water, and while it is hot let the steam play on the eye and then wash; when it cools, warm it and wash again — washing often is best. Boiling it in snow water is better still. All diseases of the eye come of the blood vessels congealing and stagnating, and so blood-moving medicines are combined with coptis to treat them; and since blood moves when it meets heat, washing while it is hot is divinely effective. Another version: Korean angelica, red peony, coptis, saposhnikovia and apricot kernel 5 don each, mint 3 don, verdigris 2 don; cut up and take 3 don, boil, and while hot fumigate first and then wash, warming it again when it cools. This too is called Tangpo-san. — Gukbang 局方 · Deukhyo 得效 (Donguibogam · An)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The reasoning attached to this one is the whole theory of the chapter's external treatments and it is stated nowhere else so plainly: every eye disease is the blood vessels congealed, blood moves when it meets heat, so wash hot. Three medicinals and nothing to argue with, and the note on snow water is the Gukbang preferring the softest water available. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
