Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治脾虛, 邪水流注, 腰膝浮腫而痛. 甘遂(生) 五錢, 木香一兩. 右爲末, 每一錢, 猪腰子一枚, 剜開去筋膜, 糝藥在內, 薄荷葉裹定, 外用濕紙四五重, 慢火煨熟, 臨臥, 細嚼, 溫酒送下, 利去黃水爲度. 《丹心》

Translation

Treats spleen vacuity with evil water flowing and lodging, and oedema and pain of the lumbus and knees. Kansui (raw) 5 don, costus 1 nyang. Powder them; for each don take one pig's kidney, split it open and remove the fascia, sprinkle the medicine inside, wrap it in mint leaves and then in four or five layers of damp paper, and roast it through over a slow fire. At bedtime chew it thoroughly and send it down with warm wine; passing yellow water is the measure. — Dansim 丹心 (Donguibogam · Bujong)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The containment technique the Accumulations chapter uses repeatedly — a violent medicinal cooked inside animal tissue before it is taken. Here raw kansui is packed into a pig's kidney, wrapped in mint and damp paper, and roasted. The choice of organ is not incidental: kidney treats kidney, and the water is being sent where the pig's kidney points. Passing yellow water as the stated endpoint is the same kind of observable criterion the Phlegm-Rheum chapter gives for its purgatives. **Kansui is a toxic drastic purgative.
