Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治水蠱. 眞生漆一兩(鍋內熔化, 麻布絞去滓, 復入鍋內熬乾), 雄黃一兩. 爲末. 右兩末, 醋糊和丸梧子大. 每四丸, 麥芽煎湯呑下. 《入門》

Translation

Treats water gu. True raw lacquer 1 nyang — melted in a pot, strained through hemp cloth to remove the dregs, then returned to the pot and reduced dry; realgar 1 nyang. Powder both. Make pills with vinegar paste the size of a firmiana seed, and take four at a time down with a decoction of barley sprout. — Uihak Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Bujong)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Two medicinals, both toxic, at a dose of four pills — the smallest dose in the section, which is itself the warning. Water gu is ascites with a hard abdomen, and the chapter treats it as a blood-and-water mass rather than as simple fluid, which is why raw lacquer appears here: it is the materia medica's most forceful blood-breaker. **This formula must not be prepared or taken. Raw lacquer is a severe contact allergen causing dermatitis on skin exposure, and realgar is arsenic sulfide. Recorded for textual completeness only.
