Translation

Treats water gu. One dried loofah, skin removed and cut small, fried together with fourteen croton kernels until the croton turns yellow; discard the croton. Add aged granary rice in the same quantity as the loofah, fry together until the rice yellows, and discard the loofah. Take the rice, powder it, and make water pills the size of a firmiana seed. Take a hundred at a time with hot water; after several doses the patient recovers. For the loofah is like the channels and network vessels of a person, and it draws the qi of croton into the skin. — Uihak Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Bujong)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The finished medicine is rice. Croton is fried with loofah and thrown away, loofah is fried with rice and thrown away, and what remains carries only what passed between them — the same technique the Accumulations chapter uses at 1.13 for coptis and again for aged rice. The stated reasoning is worth keeping: the loofah's fibrous網 structure is likened to the channels and network vessels, and it is held to carry the croton's action into the skin. That is an argument from resemblance, of the kind the Accumulations chapter sets out at 1.8.14. **Croton is toxic. This preparation should not be attempted.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
