Translation

Treats dim eyes with constant black flowers, about to become an internal obstruction. One goat gall; ox bile one hop; bear gall 2 don 5 pun; carp gall 7 don 5 pun; five black-fowl galls; bezoar 5 don. Powder them; first mix the galls together, then stir in the powdered bezoar, and simmer over a low fire in a silver or stone vessel to a paste. Take half a don after food stirred into warm wine, and dot a little into the eye as well. — Uibang Yuchwi 類聚 (Donguibogam · An)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Five galls and a bezoar reduced to a paste in a silver vessel, then both swallowed and dotted into the eye — the chapter's only preparation used inside and out at once. Bitter cold gall for the liver is the idea throughout, and the silver or stone vessel is specified because iron was held to spoil a gall preparation. **Bear gall comes from a CITES-listed species and cannot lawfully be traded.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
