Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治肝腎不足, 眼目昏暗, 常見黑花, 多下冷淚. 此壯水之主以鎭陽光, 補腎養肝, 生血明目. 黃栢ㆍ知母幷乳汁拌晒乾炒各二兩半, 熟地黃ㆍ生乾地黃(酒洗)ㆍ天門冬ㆍ麥門冬ㆍ山茱萸(酒蒸)ㆍ甘菊各二兩, 枸杞子(酒洗) 一兩六錢, 牛膝(酒洗) 一兩三錢, 人參ㆍ當歸(酒洗)ㆍ五味子ㆍ菟絲子ㆍ白茯神ㆍ山藥ㆍ栢子仁(炒)ㆍ澤瀉ㆍ牡丹皮(酒洗) 各一兩, 白豆蔲三錢. 右爲末, 蜜丸梧子大, 空心鹽湯下百丸. 《醫鑑》

Translation

Treats liver and kidney insufficiency with the eyes dim, constant black flowers and much cold tearing. This strengthens the ruler of water so as to quell the light of yang, supplements the kidney, nourishes the liver, engenders blood and brightens the eyes. Phellodendron and anemarrhena, both mixed with breast milk, sun-dried and stir-fried, 2 nyang 5 don each; prepared rehmannia, dried raw rehmannia (wine-washed), asparagus, ophiopogon, cornus (wine-steamed) and chrysanthemum 2 nyang each; lycium fruit (wine-washed) 1 nyang 6 don; achyranthes (wine-washed) 1 nyang 3 don; ginseng, Korean angelica (wine-washed), schisandra, cuscuta, poria with hostwood, dioscorea, arborvitae seed (stir-fried), alisma and moutan bark (wine-washed) 1 nyang each; cardamom 3 don. Powder them, make honey pills the size of parasol-tree seeds, and take a hundred on an empty stomach with salt decoction. — Gogeum Uigam 醫鑑 (Donguibogam · An)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Twenty medicinals, and the two that head it are cold ones — phellodendron and anemarrhena, each processed in breast milk before use, which is the Uigam's way of drawing fire down without drying. Almost every other drug is wine-washed or wine-steamed, so the whole formula is prepared to move upward; the single cardamom at the end is what keeps a hundred such pills from sitting in the stomach. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
