Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治肝腎俱虛, 多見黑花, 視物昏暗, 或生瞖障. 菟絲子(酒製) 五兩, 車前子(炒)ㆍ熟地黃各三兩. 右爲末, 蜜丸梧子大, 空心溫酒下五七十丸. 《局方》 ○一方加枸杞子一兩半尤佳.

Translation

Treats liver and kidney both vacuous with much seeing of black flowers and dim vision, or with an obstructing screen breeding. Cuscuta wine-processed 5 nyang; plantago seed (stir-fried) and prepared rehmannia 3 nyang each. Powder them, make honey pills the size of parasol-tree seeds, and take fifty to seventy on an empty stomach with warm wine. One version adds lycium fruit 1 nyang 5 don, which is better still. — Gukbang 局方 (Donguibogam · An)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Three medicinals and one of the most used eye formulas in the tradition. Cuscuta leads at five nyang; plantago seed is the drug the Gukbang relies on to carry the filling up to the eye and to drain what has gathered there, which is why it sits in a formula otherwise made of pure tonics. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
