Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治肝腎俱虛, 兩眼昏暗. 菟絲子八兩, 枸杞子ㆍ五味子ㆍ車前子ㆍ楮實子ㆍ川椒(炒) 各一兩, 熟地黃ㆍ當歸身各五錢. 右爲末, 蜜丸梧子大, 空心溫酒或鹽湯下五七十丸. 《簡易》

Translation

Treats liver and kidney both vacuous with both eyes dim. Cuscuta 8 nyang; lycium fruit, schisandra, plantago seed, paper-mulberry fruit and Sichuan pepper (stir-fried) 1 nyang each; prepared rehmannia and the body of Korean angelica 5 don each. Powder them, make honey pills the size of parasol-tree seeds, and take fifty to seventy on an empty stomach with warm wine or salt decoction. — Ganiibang 簡易 (Donguibogam · An)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Five seeds and a pepper, with cuscuta at eight nyang carrying the formula. Seeds for the eye is the organizing idea of this whole group — the seed holds what the plant will become, and the pupil is read the same way.
