Grind Away Wind Pill

Mapung-hwan

한글 마풍환  ·  Pinyin Mo Feng Wan

磨風丸

The transcription writes 晒 for 曬 and 麵 for 麪; 曬 is the corpus form and is printed, while 麵 is kept as transcribed because the variant-character table does not fold 麵 and 麪 and the corpus prints both. The interlinear 卽𦻎薟也 is given as a sochu span. The siegesbeckia is written 𦻎薟 for 豨薟, kept as transcribed following the corpus treatment of the same word in Hyeonryeong-san and in the Wind chapter; the herb dictionary heads it 豨薟草. 皺面草, the wrinkle-face herb, has no entry of its own and is recorded under huiryeomcho on the leaf's own gloss. 蒼耳草 is recorded under changija, the chapter having no whole-herb cocklebur entry. The 大風瘡 body text at 019b writes this formula 磨風元; the leaf head and the dosing cycle in the Chupung-san leaf both write 磨風丸, and that is the name registered.

Translation

Taken on the third day, twice a day. Korean angelica, notopterygium, aralia, cnidium, gastrodia, asarum, siler, schizonepeta, clematis, ephedra, fleeceflower root, vitex fruit, burdock seed, plantago seed, 皺面草 — the wrinkle-face herb, which is siegesbeckia — and cocklebur herb, 1 nyang each. Sun-dry and powder the above, make pills with wine-and-flour paste the size of a paulownia seed, and send down fifty to seventy in warm wine, twice a day. Then use the medicines that follow as a fumigating wash and a dusting powder. — Yuchwi 類聚 (Donguibogam · Jechang)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Day three, and the longest of the three. Sixteen drugs at a nyang each, every one of them a wind drug — the four 活 and 芎 of the wind-damp group, gastrodia and clematis, schizonepeta and siler, with fleeceflower, cocklebur and siegesbeckia carrying the skin indication. 磨, to grind down, names the intention: where day two purges, day three wears the wind away over a long course of pills taken twice daily. The leaf closes by handing the patient on to the next two leaves — 仍用後藥熏洗糝付, use the medicines that follow as a fumigating wash and a dusting powder — so Se-yak and Bu-yak are part of this regimen and not free-standing. **Contains ephedra and asarum in quantity.** Ephedra at a nyang in a pill taken twice a day is a sympathomimetic load, and asarum carries aristolochic acid in the root. 大風瘡 is Hansen's disease, and a wind-dispersing pill could not touch it; the modern treatment is multidrug therapy. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
