Dusting Medicine for Sores Over the Whole Body

Bu-yak

한글 부약  ·  Pinyin Fu Yao

敷藥

The interlinear 卽貫衆也 is given as a sochu span and the drug is recorded under gwanjung on that gloss, following Chobun-san in the Genital chapter, which carries the same 黑狗脊(卽貫衆也). 枯, the calcining, is a preparation and so is given in parentheses. 臘猪脂, the lard of the twelfth-month La-day, is recorded under jeoji with the seasonal direction kept in the prep. The leaf head 敷藥 is a form rather than a proper name and the id follows the corpus pattern for 外敷藥 and 圍藥.

Translation

Treats sores ulcerated all over the body. 黑狗脊 — the black dog-spine, which is dryopteris — glauberite, sulphur and calcined alum, 2 nyang each; cnidium fruit 1 nyang; crude mirabilite 5 don. Powder the above and work it up in lard rendered in the twelfth month to spread on; it works well. — Yuchwi 類聚 (Donguibogam · Jechang)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The dusting powder that follows the Se-yak wash. Sulphur and calcined alum are the working drugs — sulphur is still the oldest effective scabicide and alum a hard astringent — with glauberite and mirabilite to cool, cnidium fruit against the itch, and dryopteris, which the leaf names by its market name 黑狗脊 and then glosses. Lard rendered on the La-day of the twelfth month carries the whole as an ointment. As a formulation this is coherent: it is a sulphur-alum ointment, and on scabetic or secondarily infected skin it would have done something. What it could not do is treat leprosy. **Contains sulphur and crude mirabilite, and lard from an animal source applied to open ulceration.** Spread over a whole body of broken skin, the mineral load is absorbed and the unsterile animal fat is an infection risk on an open sore. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
