The collation note 池 : 地 falls inside this leaf's line range, on its own line at the 047b page boundary, but 池 does not occur anywhere in this leaf; it annotates 池骨皮 in the 津調散 leaf two heads above and is treated there, so nothing is changed here. 銀硃, artificial vermilion, has no entry in the herb list — it is a sublimed mercuric sulfide and is not the same article as the natural cinnabar 朱砂 — so it is left out of the ingredient list and named here. 生麻油 is entered under 淸油 by way of the 麻油 alias. The transcription writes 呵洋 where 烊 would be expected; the corpus prints both forms in equal numbers and the transcription's 洋 is kept.

Clinical commentary 臨床

Ten drugs ground together and rolled up in raw sesame oil into bullet-sized pellets, stored, and used a pellet at a time — breathed on until the surface softens, then rubbed over the sore. The 呵洋 instruction is a nice piece of practical pharmacy: the warm breath melts just enough of the oily pellet to let it spread. The chapter places this third in its local routine for 陰蝕瘡, after the licorice soak and the 洗毒散 bath — 磨風膏溫潤之, warm and moisten it with Wind-Rubbing Salve. Cnidium fruit, Sichuan pepper, calcined alum and camphor are the plausible half: an antipruritic, drying, mildly antiseptic rub. Chaulmoogra is the one drug in this chapter with a genuine history against a mycobacterial disease, and it is here on the strength of its name — 大風子, the great-wind seed — rather than for anything it can do to a genital ulcer. The other half is a catalogue of heavy metal. **Contains quicksilver, calomel, artificial vermilion and realgar — elemental mercury, a mercury salt, mercuric sulfide and an arsenic sulfide — rubbed into an open ulcer over the whole genital area, which is close to the worst possible route of exposure. Mercury is absorbed and accumulates, and the chapter itself records the result at 2.2: 或誤服水銀輕粉而成風堆腫爛流膿出汁, swelling, ulceration and running discharge from mercury given as treatment. Chaulmoogra and camphor are also toxic absorbed. This must not be prepared or applied.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
