Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治傷寒表未解, 熱鬱作衄, 俗呼謂紅汗. 麻黃ㆍ升麻ㆍ赤芍藥ㆍ黃芩ㆍ石膏ㆍ赤茯苓ㆍ甘草各一錢. 右剉, 作一貼, 薑三片, 水煎熱服, 微汗. 《入門》

Translation

Treats cold damage with the exterior unresolved and heat pent up breaking out as nosebleed, called red sweat in common speech. Ephedra, cimicifuga, red peony, scutellaria, gypsum, red poria and licorice 1 don each. Cut up, make one packet, add 3 slices of ginger, decoct in water and take hot, for a slight sweat. — Uihak Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Hyeol)

Clinical commentary 臨床

紅汗, red sweat — the tradition's name for a nosebleed in a fever, on the reasoning that the heat which should have left as sweat has left as blood instead. The treatment finishes the job the nosebleed began: open the surface and let the rest out the right way. The Sweating chapter's 7.8.2 forbids sweating in nosebleed, and this formula is the exception it allows — a slight sweat, in a fever, where the bleeding is the body's own attempt at one. **Ephedra is cardiovascularly active and restricted in many jurisdictions.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
