Translation

Treats joint-running painful wind with no sweating. Ephedra, 2 don; notopterygium, 1 don 5 fun; astragalus and asarum, 7 fun 5 ri each. Cut up, make one packet and decoct in water. — Uibang Yuchwi 得效 (Donguibogam · Pung)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Four drugs for one indication, and the indication carries the whole formula: joint pain with no sweating. Ephedra and asarum open the exterior, notopterygium reaches the joints, and astragalus is there to keep the sweating from emptying the patient. It is the tradition's answer to the acute cold-aggravated joint, and the smallest and clearest formula of the section. Ephedra at two don is a real dose and the formula should not be given to a hypertensive patient. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
