Translation

Treats the pain of an abscess that has pierced and ulcerated. Ginseng, astragalus, Korean angelica, white peony, raw rehmannia, cinnamon bark and licorice, 1 don each. Grind the above coarsely, decoct in water and take, three times a day. — Jeongui 精義 (Donguibogam · Ongjeo)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Seven medicinals at one don each, and the list is almost exactly Takri-san with rehmannia raw instead of cooked, cinnamon put in and atractylodes, peel and poria left out — which is to say a supplementing formula wearing an analgesic name. Nothing in it is a pain medicine in the way the chapter's 乳香 and 沒藥 pairs are. The reasoning is that the pain of an ulcerated sore is the pain of qi and blood that cannot reach it, so the remedy is to supply them, with cinnamon to carry them to the surface. That is the 作痛 subsection's whole position, and it is worth noticing how it differs from the section's other answer. Iseon-san, two leaves on, treats unbearable abscess pain with angelica dahurica and fritillaria and swaps their weights according to whether the sore has opened. This leaf treats the pain of the opened sore by feeding the patient. The two sit side by side without being reconciled, which is characteristic of the Bogam — it collects the positions and lets the reader choose. Taken three times a day, which is more frequent than the chapter's usual packet, and the reason is simply that the patient hurts continuously. An ulcerated abscess that is painful needs its cavity assessed; pain that is increasing is the sign that something is still undrained. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
