Cnidium and Angelica Inner Support Powder

Gunggwitangni-san

한글 궁귀탁리산  ·  Pinyin Xiong Gui Tuo Li San

芎歸托裏散

The leaf opens without a 治 clause: 托裏排膿生肌 serves as both the indication and the sense of the name. 辣桂, the pungent cinnamon, is registered under 肉桂. 甘草生 is the raw rather than honey-roasted licorice. The transcription prints 為 in the alternative powder instruction; 爲 is printed above.

Supports from within, drives the pus out and grows new flesh. Cnidium, Korean angelica, wine-fried white peony, white poria, costus root and dahurian angelica, 1 don 2 fun each; ginseng, pungent cinnamon bark, clove and raw licorice, 7 fun each. Cut the above, make one packet, decoct in water and take. Or powder it and send down 2 don each time in rice broth. — Jikji 直指 (Donguibogam · Ongjeo)

Clinical commentary 臨床

芎歸, cnidium and Korean angelica, are the pair that names it, and the formula is built on blood rather than qi — unusual in the 托裏 group, where ginseng and astragalus normally lead. Here ginseng is at 7 fun, there is no astragalus at all, and the weight sits on the blood drugs and the aromatics: costus root, clove and pungent cinnamon are three warming movers, and dahurian angelica is the surface-opening drug the tradition used wherever pus had to come forward. That makes this the version of 托裏 for a sore that is cold, painful and slow rather than simply depleted — the aromatics and cinnamon are there for a wound that is not inflamed enough, not for one that is too hot. The alternative given at the end, powdered and taken in rice broth, is the cheaper and more portable form, and the dose halves. The modern reading is the same as for the rest of the group: nothing taken by mouth drives pus out of a cavity, but a patient who is better nourished and better perfused does granulate and close. A chronically painful non-healing wound is worth reassessing for an undrained pocket or dead tissue underneath it. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
