Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治癰疽潰後, 補氣血, 進飮食, 排膿生肌. 黃芪(酒蒸)ㆍ熟地黃ㆍ當歸ㆍ川芎ㆍ人參ㆍ白茯苓ㆍ白芍藥(炒)ㆍ白朮ㆍ陳皮ㆍ烏藥ㆍ五味子ㆍ桂心ㆍ甘草 各八分. 右剉, 作一貼, 入薑三ㆍ棗二, 水煎服. 《得效》

Translation

Treats the state after an abscess has burst: it supplements qi and blood, improves the appetite, drives the pus out and grows new flesh. Wine-steamed astragalus, prepared rehmannia, Korean angelica, cnidium, ginseng, white poria, dry-fried white peony, white atractylodes, aged tangerine peel, lindera, schisandra, inner cinnamon bark and licorice, 8 fun each. Cut the above, make one packet, add 3 slices of ginger and 2 jujubes, decoct in water and take. — Seui Deukhyobang 得效 (Donguibogam · Ongjeo)

Clinical commentary 臨床

This is the Perfect Major Supplementation Decoction — Eight Substances with astragalus and cinnamon added — with aged tangerine peel, lindera and schisandra put in on top of it, which is where the 加味 of the name comes from. The ten of the base supplement qi and blood together; the three additions are there for the appetite, the tangerine peel and lindera moving the middle so that the heavy supplements can be taken at all, and schisandra astringing. Flattening every weight to 8 fun is characteristic of the Deukhyo leaves and makes the formula a broad convalescent prescription rather than a targeted one. That is what it is for: 進飮食, improving the appetite, is listed as an aim beside the wound itself, and the chapter's own argument in this section is that the wound will not close until the patient is eating. 排膿生肌 is a claim about the body rather than about the drugs — new flesh does grow and a cavity does close, given blood, protein and perfusion — and the modern parallel is real: anaemia and protein-calorie malnutrition are among the better-documented reasons a wound fails to heal, and correcting them changes the outcome.
