Clinical commentary 臨床

Eight drugs, and only one of them is a plant: bile-processed arisaema, cinnabar, amber, bamboo sugar, realgar, ox bezoar, pearl and musk, with gold leaf inside and out. It is the same shelf as 金箔鎭心丸 as 神門 registers it from 回春 — the same eight substances in different proportions — and the two should be read as one prescription travelling under two names. The patient is a child, and the text gives no dose by weight anywhere: five or six pills, with no indication of age or size. **Contains cinnabar, which is mercuric sulfide, and realgar, which is arsenic sulfide. Neither must be prepared or given, least of all to a child** — see the first cinnabar leaf in this section for why the developing nervous system is the organ at risk. Ox bezoar and musk are both from protected animals and musk is CITES Appendix I. The gold leaf, by contrast, is inert and does nothing at all, good or bad. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
