Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治急驚風熱. 天竺黃ㆍ生乾地黃ㆍ當歸ㆍ竹葉ㆍ草龍膽ㆍ川芎ㆍ大黃(煨)ㆍ羌活ㆍ防風各二錢半. 右爲末, 蜜丸芡實大, 每二丸, 砂糖水化下. 《綱目》

Translation

Treats the heat of acute fright wind. Bamboo sugar, dried rehmannia, angelica, bamboo leaf, gentian, chuanxiong, rhubarb (roasted in hot ash), notopterygium and siler, 2 don 5 fun each. Powder them, bind with honey into pills the size of a gorgon-nut seed, and give two at a time dissolved in sugar water. — Gangmok 綱目 (Donguibogam · Soa)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Essentially 瀉靑丸 rebuilt for a hotter child: the same core of gentian, angelica, chuanxiong, rhubarb, notopterygium and siler, with gardenia dropped and bamboo sugar, dried rehmannia and bamboo leaf put in its place. Nine drugs in equal 2 don 5 fun shares, honey pills the size of a gorgon-nut seed, two at a time in sugar water. The sugar water is not decoration — it is the only part of the prescription a frightened parent would have been glad to see. 急驚風 is the acute febrile seizure: a previously well child spikes a fever and convulses. It happens to two to five children in a hundred, it is almost always benign, and it stops by itself within a few minutes. Nothing in this pill stops a seizure, and nothing needed to. What the formula actually does is purge, and that is the thing to weigh — rhubarb in a child who is already febrile and losing fluid works against the one intervention that matters, which is keeping the child drinking. This is one of the few leaves in 急驚風 with no cinnabar in it at all, which is worth noticing before the next ten leaves. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
