Translation

Treats phlegm cough where other medicines have had no effect. Arisaema and pinellia, both processed, clam shell powder, anemarrhena, fritillary and alum, 1 don each. Cut up, make one packet, decoct with five slices of ginger, let it settle clear, and have the patient take it slowly. — Seui Deukhyobang 得效 (Donguibogam · Haesu)

Clinical commentary 臨床

煎澄淸, 徐徐服 — decoct it, let it settle clear, take it slowly — is the whole instruction and it is unusual enough to be the formula's signature: the mineral drugs are allowed to fall out of suspension and only the clear liquid is given, a little at a time. In a cough that has refused everything else, a slowly sipped clear liquid is also the least likely to set off more coughing. **Contains arisaema and pinellia, toxic in the raw state, and alum. All three must be properly processed and it is recorded here as the text gives it.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
