Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治痰嗽. 半夏ㆍ瓜蔞仁各五兩, 貝母ㆍ桔梗各二兩, 枳殼一兩半, 知母一兩. 右爲末, 薑汁浸蒸餠和丸梧子大, 薑湯下五七十丸. 半夏須久浸薑汁炒黃色, 否則辣喉. 《正傳》

Translation

Treats phlegm cough. Pinellia and trichosanthes seed, 5 nyang each; fremontodendron fritillary and platycodon, 2 nyang each; bitter orange peel, 1 nyang 5 fun; anemarrhena, 1 nyang. Grind to a powder, make pills the size of a paulownia seed with steamed cake soaked in ginger juice, and give fifty to seventy down with ginger decoction. The pinellia must be long steeped in ginger juice and dry-fried to a yellow colour, for otherwise it burns the throat. — Uihak Jeongjeon 正傳 (Donguibogam · Haesu)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Half the weight of the formula is pinellia and trichosanthes seed in equal measure, which is the pairing the chapter uses whenever the phlegm is thick: pinellia dries it and trichosanthes seed slips it out. Fritillary and anemarrhena are there to keep the drying from turning to heat, and platycodon lifts the whole toward the chest. 否則辣喉 — otherwise it burns the throat — is the Jeongjeon's own reason for the long steeping, and it is an accurate description of what unprocessed pinellia does to the mucosa. **Pinellia is toxic in the raw state and must be properly processed.** — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
