Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治風熱痰盛ㆍ咳嗽聲重. 半夏麴六兩, 人參ㆍ薄荷ㆍ白茯苓ㆍ白礬(枯)ㆍ南星(泔浸焙) 各三兩. 右爲末, 薑汁煮麪糊和丸梧子大, 薑湯下五七十丸. 《得效》

Translation

Treats wind heat with abundant phlegm and a heavy-sounding cough. Pinellia leaven, 6 nyang; ginseng, mint, white poria, calcined alum and arisaema steeped in rice-washing water and baked, 3 nyang each. Grind to a powder, make pills the size of a paulownia seed with a flour paste boiled with ginger juice, and give fifty to seventy down with ginger decoction. — Seui Deukhyobang 得效 (Donguibogam · Haesu)

Clinical commentary 臨床

聲重, a heavy sound, is the cough of a voice thickened by phlegm, and the formula is built for bulk rather than subtlety: pinellia leaven at twice the weight of anything else, with arisaema beside it, and alum to bind and dry. The mint and ginseng are the correctives — one for the wind heat, one for the patient who has to take a drying formula for weeks. **Contains arisaema and pinellia, toxic in the raw state and here in processed forms; both must be properly processed.
