Donguibogam 東醫寶鑑

治心肝壅熱, 目赤腫痛, 生赤瞖, 或白膜遮睛. 四邉散漫者易治, 若暴遮黑睛, 多致失明. 熟地黃ㆍ當歸 各五錢, 生乾地黃ㆍ木通ㆍ甘草 各三錢, 黃連ㆍ大黃ㆍ防風ㆍ羌活ㆍ犀角屑ㆍ蟬殼ㆍ木賊ㆍ糓精草ㆍ玄參ㆍ白蒺藜 各二錢. 右爲末, 每二錢, 煎羊肝湯下, 食後, 日三. 亦治小兒瘡疹餘毒入眼生瞖. 《海藏》

Translation

Treats heart and liver heat congested with the eye red, swollen and painful and a red screen breeding, or a white membrane veiling the pupil. Where it is scattered loosely all round it is easy to treat; but where it suddenly veils the black of the eye it often ends in blindness. Prepared rehmannia and Korean angelica 5 don each; dried raw rehmannia, akebia and licorice 3 don each; coptis, rhubarb, saposhnikovia, notopterygium, rhinoceros horn shavings, cicada slough, horsetail, pipewort flower, scrophularia and tribulus 2 don each. Powder them and take 2 don at a time down with a sheep's liver decoction, after food, three times a day. It also treats a screen in a child's eye from the residual toxin of pox. — Haejang 海藏 (Donguibogam · An)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The prognostic clause is what to keep: a screen scattered loosely around the edge is easy, one that suddenly veils the pupil often ends in blindness — which is the difference between peripheral and central corneal involvement, and it is still the difference that matters. The closing line on post-pox screens in children points to measles keratitis, a leading cause of childhood blindness where vitamin A is scarce, and the sheep's liver draught is the right thing for it. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
