Translation

Treats wind stroke with a mute tongue and useless legs, the kidney vacuous and weak and its qi reversed so that it does not reach beneath the tongue. Cooked rehmannia, morinda, cornus, cistanche, dendrobium, polygala, schisandra, poria and ophiopogon, 1 don each; blast-fried aconite, cassia bark and acorus, 5 fun each. Cut up, make one packet, add three slices of ginger, two jujubes and a little mint, decoct together and take on an empty stomach. — Hagan Yubang 河間 (Donguibogam · Pung)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The best-known formula of the 暴瘖 section and the clearest statement of its mechanism: the kidney qi is reversed and does not reach beneath the tongue. Mute tongue above and useless legs below is the pattern — which is to say a lesion with both bulbar and motor involvement — and the answer is not to attack the wind but to supplement the root and send a little acorus and mint up to open the orifice. Nine supplementing drugs at full dose, three warming and opening drugs at half: the proportion is the formula's argument. It remains in use for post-stroke dysarthria and for the speech loss of vascular dementia, and of everything in this section it is the one with the most to recommend it. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
