Translation

Treats wind stroke with phlegm confusing the orifice of the heart, speech halting and rough, or loss of consciousness. Arisaema and pinellia — the two soaked for three days in water with alum, fresh ginger and gleditsia pod, then sun-dried — 1 don each; tangkuei, chuanxiong, white peony, raw rehmannia, ophiopogon, polygala, acorus, tangerine peel, poria, lindera, bitter orange, coptis, saposhnikovia, notopterygium and licorice, 5 fun each. Cut up, make one packet, add three slices of ginger and one ball of bamboo shavings, decoct in water, and take stirred with boy's urine, ginger juice and bamboo sap. — Uihak Jeonggam 醫鑑 (Donguibogam · Pung)

Clinical commentary 臨床

Seventeen drugs and three added liquids, which makes it the broadest of the speech formulas and the one that tries to cover every mechanism at once: phlegm cleared with arisaema, pinellia, bamboo and coptis; blood nourished with the four-substance group; orifices opened with polygala and acorus; wind dispelled with saposhnikovia and notopterygium. Formulas built this way tend to be weak everywhere, and the Jeonggam's own framing — phlegm confusing the orifice of the heart — points at the two or three drugs that matter. The processing instruction is the most useful line in the entry: it shows what a competent hand did to arisaema and pinellia before using them together at a full don each. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
