Translation

Treats wind stroke with a stiff tongue and loss of speech. That is, Ryanggyeok-san with acorus and polygala added; powder, make honey pills the size of a bullet, coat with cinnabar, and dissolve one in mint decoction for each dose. — Uihak Immun 入門 (Donguibogam · Pung)

Clinical commentary 臨床

A modification rather than a formula of its own: take the heat-draining Ryanggyeok-san, add the two orifice-opening drugs acorus and polygala, pill it and coat it in cinnabar. The reasoning is the tradition's standard one for aphasia with a red face and a hard pulse — the heat is in the chest and diaphragm, clear that and the tongue will turn. It sits in deliberate opposition to Jihwang-eumja a few entries earlier, which treats the same symptom from vacuity, and a physician was expected to choose between them. The cinnabar coating makes this one unsafe to prepare as written. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl. O.M.
