Translation

Treats kidney visceral wind with halting, stammering speech. One pair of sheep's kidneys, 2 nyang of sliced ginger and 1 nyang 7 don of crushed magnetite are boiled in 1 mal of water down to 5 seung; then add scrophularia, white peony and poria, 1 nyang 2 don 5 fun each, astragalus, chuanxiong, schisandra, cassia heart, tangkuei, ginseng, saposhnikovia and licorice, 1 nyang each, and lycium bark, 5 don, all cut up, and boil again down to 2 seung. Strain and divide into three doses. — Uibang Yuchwi 得效 (Donguibogam · Pung)

Clinical commentary 臨床

The first of the chapter's two aphasia formulas and the one built on the organ rather than on the orifice. Sheep's kidney as the carrier, magnetite to weigh the ascending qi down, and then a broad kidney-and-blood supplementing body — this is a formula for the slow speech of a depleted patient, not the sudden mutism of an acute stroke. The staging is worth noticing: the heavy animal and mineral ingredients get their own long boil, and the aromatics and tonics are added only for the second reduction, which is how a classical compounder protected the volatile constituents. — Eui Young (Justin) Chung, L.Ac., Dipl.
